Scary dolls aren’t quite news – just take a loot at the Creepy Dolls collection, if you’d like to refresh your memory.
Canadian photographer Mariel Clayton also appreciates the art of transfiguring dolls, but she chose Barbie – the most well-known, beloved doll in the world – to be the star in her shootings. In this work, the artist establishes a strong contrast between the blondes’ sweet smiles and the super bizarre sceneries that hold truly cruel acts of murder.
Clayton has chosen to work with Barbies because she thinks they represent the immortalized image of the futile, superficial woman, born to be the perfect housewife. “Behind the vacuous perpetual lipsticked-smile and soulless eyes lurks the black heart of the true sociopath, just like in real life.” Seems like she really hates them.
Clayton gets a lot of criticism for her work, but argues back stating that she’s not a feminist nor intend to transmit any kind of political message through her pictures: “I’m just trying to have fun and share it with others”, she says.
